Health Information Management, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science joint-degree program in Health Information Management (HIM) with Rutgers University School of Health Professions (SHP) qualifies students for a professional certification examination. The HIM degree program is completed in two stages: Students complete 68 credits of prerequisite and General Education courses at NJCU and 61 credits of professional courses in HIM at Rutgers SHP. After successful completion of the program, students earn a Bachelor of Science degree in HIM from NJCU and Rutgers-SHRP and eligibility for AHIMA’s Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification exam.

Health Information Managers are health care professionals responsible for the management of health information systems consistent with medical, administrative, ethical and legal requirements. Health information professionals collect, analyze and utilize data to provide information critical to the health care industry. Registered Health Information Administrators (RHIA) collect data from a variety of sources, monitor the integrity of the information, ensure appropriate access to health records, and manage the analysis and use of data. The RHIA is an essential connection between physicians, patients, payers and others in the healthcare industry.
