Completion of this major prepares one for a career as a jazz performer. Continued study may include a master’s degree Jazz performance or other areas of music.

THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THIS DEGREE TRACK ARE:

• Audition is required to be admitted into the program.
• A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 in music courses is required.
• All applied instructions need to be taken with chamber music, large ensemble and music seminar.

Students enrolled in majors with 50 degree credits or higher due to external accreditation requirements are exempt from up to 9 General Education requirements in Tier 2 section of the program in courses most closely aligned to the courses taken.

• Applied Music must be taken with Jazz Combos, Large Ensemble and Seminar
• This program’s total credit includes one tier I course called world music
• Needs to maintain 3.0 GPA for music courses

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Music Performance -Jazz program, students will be able to demonstrate:

1. Comprehensive skills and knowledge of music theory, and music history.
2. Comprehensive skills and knowledge of musical performance.
3. Knowledge to compose and arrange original compositions as well as the skills to orchestrate for small and large ensemble.
4. Develop an awareness of the current materials and methodologies used in articulating a jazz curriculum from kindergarten through the college level.
5. Comprehensive skills and knowledge needed to understand how the music industry functions.
