Health Sciences—School Health Education, M.S.

The School Health Education specialization provides advanced preparation for those interested in health education in a school system. Students in this program take courses in educational theory and methods, as well as courses focused upon particular issues related to children and teenagers, such as drug abuse, mental health, and family life education. The 39-credit program can be completed on a part-time basis, enabling individuals to maintain their present employment status.

CHES Exam requires 25-27 credits of Health Ed. Courses to qualify to sit for the exam.

HLTH 503, 505 *Students can select one of these Drivers Education Certificate classes to apply toward MS degree requirements. Students wanting NJ Certificate must complete both HLTH 503 & 505.

Substitution of any of the above courses must be approved in writing by Department Chairperson.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the School Health Education Masters, students will be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate (both orally and in writing) beliefs, ideas, and information about health promotion and prevention to students, teachers, parents, and the community.
  2. Create a healthy and safe school and community while bringing together all stakeholders.
  3. Develop plans, in collaboration with the entire health team and other members of the child study team, to help students with challenges.
  4. Recognize, as culturally competent citizens, how racism, sexism, prejudice, and power impact the health and development of children and teenagers in educational settings.
  5. Sit for the national Certified Health Education Specialist exam offered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc.
