Mission

The Office of Adult and Continuing Education is reimagining the way we learn, what we learn and how we learn. We seek to promote lifelong learning by providing all learners – of all ages in all contexts – the knowledge and skills they need to realize their full potential. Education is not limited to a single period of one’s lifetime. We advocate for continuous discovery and support the life cycle of learners with programs for youth seeking new topics to explore, enrichment activities, and new opportunities for skills development; for adults seeking workforce and professional development and short-term certifications; and for mature citizens, looking for intellectual stimulation and the comfort of a shared community experience. A growing number of courses are offered in Spanish.

NJCU’s Adult and Continuing Education space is home to non-credit foundational literacy classes, professional certifications, pathways, and bridges from applied work experience to college credit. We offer a wide range of online courses leading to certifications. As a workforce development center, we work with the New Jersey Department of Labor through the One Stop Career Centers of Hudson County, Essex County, Bergen County, Union County and Middlesex County, providing educational training leading to certifications and employment opportunities for some of the greatest at-risk members of the community. They include individuals who are unemployed and seeking a return to the labor market, underemployed, or job changers from populations of youth (16-24), individuals with disabilities, mature workers (55+), displaced homemakers, veterans, and second chance citizens.

Adult and Continuing Education at NJCU provides customized training programs in business communication, leadership, and many other courses designed to meet the

unique skill development needs of employers. We recognize that each organization is unique with specific training requirements. We offer free consultation and work closely with community and corporate representatives to create a customized training program that meets the unique needs of our community partners. As such, the Office also promotes the University’s focus on awarding credit for prior learning through various means of military, industry or corporate training courses, work experiences, international education, and competency testing to build a growing number of pathways from non-traditional learning experiences to college degrees.
