Forensic Studies, Minor

The Minor in Forensic Studies program will expose students who are interested in forensics to foundational coursework in criminal justice and areas of applied forensic science commonly utilized and applied by individuals working in the professional arenas of national security, law enforcement, professional security, and/or the criminal justice system.  The forensic study areas covered in the program include forensic investigations and crime scene investigation.  The criminal justice areas covered in the program provide an introduction and overview of the criminal justice system and criminal investigations.

Students earning the Minor in Forensic Studies degree from NJCU will demonstrate proficiency in their abilities to meet the following Forensic Studies based Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the application of the scientific method to crime scene investigation and reconstruction, and the associated areas of applied forensic studies.  [FS1]
  2. Execute proficiency in the application of the proper procedures for crime scene investigation, including the recognition, identification, preservation, documentation, and collection of evidence. [FS2]
  3. Analyze and evaluate evidence in the field and in the crime-lab setting. [FS3]
  4. Describe knowledge obtained covering the topics, techniques, and skills of applied forensic studies. [FS4]
  5. Apply an understanding of tools used in applied forensic studies and demonstrate an ability to utilize such tools. [FS5] 
  6. Evaluate primary scientific and professional literature from fields of forensic studies, and critique emerging concepts and technology in the field. [FS6] 
  7. Create effective written and oral communications and explain forensic concepts and observations/findings related to crime scenes and physical evidence. [FS7]
  8. Evaluate the importance of forensic studies in the criminal justice system. [FS8]
  9. Develop students prepared for further education and training and for employment in fields involving forensic studies. [FS9]
