Art—New Jersey Art Teacher Certification Program (P–12)

The New Jersey City University Art Teacher Certification Program (ATCP) prepares the Art student to become a certified Art Teacher for grades Preschool through 12 in the State of New Jersey. NJCU is a Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and National Association of Art and Design (NASAD) accredited institution.
 
There are two paths to achieve Art Teacher Certification at New Jersey City University:
 
BA or BFA in ART with the ART TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
  • Degree seeking Freshman or Transfer Students can combine the BA or BFA in Art with the ART TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
 
The CERTIFICATION ONLY Program
  • Students who have already received a BA or BFA in Art degree at an accredited university or college can enter the Art Teacher Certification Only program.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Please consult the ATCP Degree Map for the program requirements and course sequencing. There are no exceptions to the required sequence of classes as noted on the Degree Map.
 
The requirements for enrollment in the fall capstone class Clinical Practice I are:
  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0.
  • A minimum of B- or better on all education courses
The requirements for enrollment in the spring capstone class Clinical Practice II are:
  • A passing score on the Art Content Knowledge Praxis exam. This must be submitted to the Center for Teacher Preparation and Partnerships by February 15th of the preceding semester
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Successful completion of ART 393 Clinical Practice I
Completion of the Art Teacher Certification Program:
  • Completion of NJCU General Education requirements or equivalent (for BA and BFA with ATCP candidates)
  • Successful completion of major in intended content area (for BA and BFA with ATCP candidates)
  • Successful completion of all ATCP requirements as listed on the ATCP Degree Map and as required by the State of New Jersey.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
