The Alternate Route is a certification program that allows qualified candidates to begin teaching after taking a 50-hour Introduction to Teaching course. The candidates then take the remaining two years of coursework while they are teaching. Alternate route candidates begin as a regular classroom teacher. They will have a mentor assigned to them–typically another teacher in the school—for the first year. They will have all the responsibilities and salary of a fully certified teacher and must obtain an effective summative evaluation rating in two of their first three years of teaching.

To start teaching Spanish in any NJ Public schools, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CE), which entails the following steps:

  1. Spanish Bachelor’s Degree (includes LANG 510, required by NJDOE when applying for Standard Certificate). While taking your BA coursework ,we will help you to get plenty of practice for:
  2. Spanish Praxis II test
  3. Praxis Core Academic Skills test
  4. Spanish OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview ). Then, you will need a
  5. Hygiene, Nutrition or Biology course, that you may have already taken as part of NJCU General Education course
  6. Then, we help you to get documents ready to apply for your Certificate of Eligibility

Finally,  you will be able to apply to NJCU New Pathways to Teaching while working as teacher with your CE (Certificate of Eligibility). NJCU New Pathways to Teaching will offer you the coursework required to move from your Certificate of Eligibility) to the Standard Certificate (CE) or permanent license.
