Spanish, B.A.
Completion of this major prepares you for a career as a Spanish language instructor, translator/interpreter, bilingual assistant in state agencies (embassies and consulates, law enforcement, etc.), and other jobs that require a deep knowledge of both the language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Continued study may include a master’s degree in Spanish and a certificate, B.A., or master’s degree in translation or in court or medical interpreting.
The minimum requirements for admission to this degree track are a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and 2.0 general education CGPA.

The Department of World Languages and Cultures to take the Spanish Writing Assessment Test (SWAT).
Students will not be permitted to take Spanish major courses until passing the SWAT.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Spanish BA program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.
- Apply skills in linguistics for translation and interpreting.
- Illustrate the ability to read critically, interpret analytically, speak persuasively, and write coherently about both visual and verbal texts produced in the Spanish-speaking world.
- Assess methodological approaches in the study of literary and cultural texts, such as close reading, socio-historical contextualization, and literary and cultural theory.
- Examine literary and cultural traditions, such as major movements, writers, and works of the Spanish-speaking world, focusing on at least one and ideally multiple traditions: Latin American, Spanish and US/Latinx cultures.
- Develop the competencies necessary for scholarly research and writing in the Humanities.
